Zig Zack: Nadine, tell us about “Nuff Said”.
Nadine: “Nuff Said“, our latest endeavor, began as an angry nu metal instrumental with a prominent hook line, marrying the sounds of the 2000s with modern elements. The song explores an inner conflict about bad habits and breaking free. The collaboration with Ampersandman and Brett Anthony added layers of authenticity, turning the composition into a dialogue of voices. Brett's rap about mental health struggles and developing self-esteem brought a unique dimension to the song. The guitars, bass and singing were performed by Ampersandman, whose punk rock influences shined through.
Zig Zack: Can you show the process of your last album?
Nadine: “Quarterlife Blues” is a collection of blues and jazz collaborations in the last two years. My albums are not planned. I write whatever genre or topic I like and sort later. This time, most songs I wrote with my acoustic guitar went blues and jazz. I shared some rough drafts with my friends and my collaboration circle, which were inspired to co-write, add lyrics, vocals, solo or helped me recording all the instruments I cannot play. After many months of intense work, I figured out that most of the lyrics were dealing with life crisis and big changes. The title “Quarterlife Blues“ happened in a conversation, where we joked about being too young for a midlife crisis but still having the blues. It sounded like a splendid title for a song, and ended up being the album title, because many songs fit into that theme. The track list is arranged in a way that it tells a consistent story, though the lyrics were written by many different people. “Quarterlife Blues“ is not my work alone - It's the effort of 30 people who found together with music.
Zig Zack Interim discussion
As our conversation flowed, Nadine shared insights into her meticulous planning for collaborations, emphasizing the thoughtful organization required. While her songwriting remains spontaneous, the coordination of collaborative efforts is a carefully orchestrated dance. With multiple bands running in parallel, each project demands a thorough planning. Nadine delves into the nuances of her creative process, where the spontaneity of songwriting meets the precision of project management. The fixed roles, technical constraints, and collaborative dynamics form a structured framework within creative sparks can flourish. When she begins crafting a song, she contemplates not only the musical elements but also who to invite for specific roles, what information to share, and when to communicate these intricacies. This meticulous approach ensures that collaborations are cohesive and harmonious efforts, allowing the diverse team of 2-8 individuals to contribute their unique flavors while adhering to a predefined structure.
Zig Zack: Can you discuss the significance of album artwork in conveying your artistic vision?
Nadine: Finding and designing the right image for a song or album is an essential part of the artistic process. The artwork has to match the genre, mood and topic as most listeners strongly identify with certain genres and lifestyles. I would pick a completely different picture, color scheme or font for a punk rock or electronic song or album. It takes weeks to find the right picture and I do about twenty drafts to find the right placement of text and color. Sometimes I even end up drawing covers with my graphics tablet (see "Dorian Gray") because I have a clear artistic vision, but no photo or stock image. I try my best not to use AI, because I respect art as expression of human emotions and handicraft.
Zig Zack: Nadine, what’s your advice to independent artists?
